After graduating from Lincoln University, Pastor Brooks returned to Kansas City and began his career as Program Director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Within eight months, he was promoted to Unit Director of the John T. Thornberry Boys and Girls Club. Two years later, he became Area Director, and in September 1993, he was appointed Vice President of Operations. After a successful career with the Boys and Girls Clubs, Pastor Brooks resigned on November 15, 1998, to dedicate himself fully to ministry.
Pastor Brooks was called to the ministry and licensed in August 1988 under the mentorship of the late Dr. Mac Charles Jones, then Pastor of St. Stephens Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. He was ordained by the late Pastor Preston Allen, Jr. at Macedonia Baptist Church. On April 19, 1997, Pastor Brooks was called to lead Macedonia Baptist Church as Senior Pastor.
Under Pastor Brooks’ leadership, Macedonia Baptist Church has introduced numerous ministries and initiatives, including hiring the church's first full-time Youth Pastor, Financial Secretary, Office Manager, and Administrative Assistant. Many men have accepted their call to preach the gospel, and numerous deacons have embraced their call to serve. Outreach initiatives during his pastorate have included the Senior Outreach Luncheon, door-to-door witnessing in Greater Kansas City, partnerships with Freedom Fire, pancake breakfasts and clothing giveaways, the Convoy of Hope, Macedonia’s Internship Program, The Macedonia Leadership Institute, and international mission trips.
In response to the church’s rapid growth, Pastor Brooks led Macedonia in building a new edifice at 1700 E. Linwood, keeping the church in the heart of Kansas City. This new space allows the church to continue its mission: “To Lead Men, Women, Boys, and Girls to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.”
Pastor John L. Brooks’ ministry has been characterized by dedication, growth, and a profound commitment to serving the spiritual and practical needs of the community.
